I agree with the winner, but I see that the added up rating is used to determine the winners and not the averages? I would have voted differently if I knew that.

yay, but think again about it, if the average rating would succede the total amount, a single 5 star rating would rule out everything, it is the interaction that gone into account here! and in fact i like the fact that strategic voters are mislead by this method, because voting one single star to everyone elses is even better than no voting at all

______________________________________________________________________________________ Greetings and Salutations to all!
It is the step you take to try it, the very first step, that ushers in opportunity to win it! We want to congratulate all, all those who participated, in the fractal forums 2013 contests! And a special thank you, and congratulation to all the well deserved winners, and Fractal champions!

I fully agree with Christian here. I judged every single entry (except my own) in all three sections and I used the full range from 0 (no vote) to 5 points. So no vote from me, was a judgement itself. I'm ok with that way of voting. And Dinky, you're no newbe. You could have found out yourself, by taking a closer look at last years stats... One word to the film section. It's the closest possible decission and it's really hard for slon_ru to be beaten by one single point. Keep up! This years winner was second last year, so your chance is high to make it next time. On my list you were on top already this year. But no harm effie - you're still a deserved winner! Congrats from me.

And Dinky, you're no newbe. You could have found out yourself, by taking a closer look at last years stats... Yes, I have seen the entries from previous years, but I didn't participate since 2009, so I didn't pay close enough attention to notice that.

it is true, in the beginning it was the average, but the participation developed like this, and this was not so obvious in the beginning, i think we changed it at around 2010 or something ... index | year | sum(totalratings) | entries | averageVoteCount | averageRating | 1 | 2008 | 249 | 53 | 4,6981 | 4,1365 | index | year | sum(totalratings) | entries | averageVoteCount | averageRating | 1 | 2009 | 514 | 62 | 8,2903 | 3,2510 |
index | year | sum(totalratings) | entries | averageVoteCount | averageRating | 1 | 2010 | 1491 | 131 | 11,3817 | 2,9698 |
index | year | sum(totalratings) | entries | averageVoteCount | averageRating | 1 | 2011 | 1772 | 162 | 10,9383 | 3,3606 |
index | year | sum(totalratings) | entries | averageVoteCount | averageRating | 1 | 2012 | 2108 | 195 | 10,8103 | 3,5090 |

Yes the ratings threw me at first (how did I actually win?) but it makes sense to me now and that is how I voted as well with no vote=zero. I am regretting not making a second film because that would have split my votes. I made a promise to myself to repay the community by making a GUI version of my app if I won. I made the promise last year but I guess it still holds. Don't expect too much though.

Actually there is a way to calculate the score in a way which is more fair -- capturing both situation with many votes and protecting from single 5-stars and no-votes. The only needed data is: the SUM of votes and the NUMBER of votes (the AVERAGE is not sufficient by itself).

please elaborate more, both values are available above, the rating is the sum, and totalratings is the count ... please tell us how you would do it

No problem, cKleinhuis. It uses basic arithmetic operations and exponents.
I'd need some time to prepare a few examples, covering all extreme situations that I can think of. Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I'll post it... Then we can all play different scenarios to find whether my suggestion is good or bad.
Stay tuned...

I'd need some time to prepare a few examples...Stay tuned... I'm ready with the proposal. I will send it to you in a pm, so you will be the first (private) reviewer. If you think the proposal has some potential, then make it public and let others provide feedback. The method has some flexibility, so it may need some fine-tuning until it reaches the optimal balance between the average score and the popularity of an entry. (I finalized the proposal while sleeping, so I hope there are not so many mistakes)
