I use natural textures like dirt, stones and so on. I used 3D noise only for generation of the water surface in Solaris.
The flight path is almost random, actually it is a set of sines:

For prevent collisions I use such algorithm:

The result is a clipping of objects located close to the camera. Now I have changed this algorithm, I began to melt objects. It looks quite cool, this effect may be used in the second disc.
The colormaps have been made manually (I use about 1000 colormaps), I think that an artist can make it much better than any computer
Concerning the field of view:
I use 45 degrees frustum, but you can see quite noticeable distortions at the edges of the screen. Maybe I'll move on to the spherical surface, but in this case the motion of the camera will result that the landscape will move in different directions along the edges of the screen. So I'm not sure it would be better.
I think you appreciated a deep water in the "Solaris" and translucent stones in the "Hidden life of stones"
This can be seen only on 3D TV.
